In the age of digital TV, it is vital to equip buildings with the technology to receive TV broadcasts transmitted in a variety of different formats. A communal aerial system that can receive both the existing analogue and new digital TV signals will ensure that every resident has the choice to access a superior level of picture and programme quality offered by digital TV.
Digital TV transmissions can be received in three ways, firstly, where cable TV is available, digital cable services can be provided (DCATV), digital satellite TV (DSAT) can be accessed using a dish and appropriate set top box. Digital terrestrial TV (DTT) can be received via an existing terrestrial aerial, however, the majority will need some form of modification to receive digital terrestrial TV signals.
For communal reception of digital satellite TV (DSAT) a switched integrated reception system (IRS) is needed, which enables analogue terrestrial signals, DTTV, DSAT, FM radio, Digital audio broadcasting and even localised CCTV signals to be received. This system means that residents sharing a communal aerial or dish can choose individually weather they wish to subscribe to one of the digital TV services.
